Introduction
Hi, I’m Nikos.
I’m a web and software developer based in Greece. I build WordPress sites, develop custom software solutions, and run a digital services business. I’m also the founder of DMSI (Dream Makers Software Innovations), where I create tools that help developers and digital product creators turn their ideas into sustainable businesses.
Here’s how DMSI DDLS came to be.
Our Story
Why I Built DMSI DDLS
The Beginning: From Web Developer to Software Creator
I professionally develop WordPress sites for clients, offering hosting, support, maintenance, SEO, and digital marketing services. For years, this was my business model – solid, predictable work.
But specific customer needs kept pointing me in a new direction: they needed software solutions that either didn’t exist or were insanely expensive. I realized I could build these solutions myself and add them to my service portfolio. More importantly, I could potentially create new revenue streams beyond client services.
So I started developing software products. But immediately, I faced a problem: how do I protect what I’m building? I needed licensing. I needed download management. I needed a way to handle updates.
The Wake-Up Call
Then something embarrassing happened.
I was so focused on development that I forgot to remind several clients about renewing their hosting and support services. This wasn’t just lost revenue – it made me look unprofessional. For a technically-oriented person like me, this was unacceptable.
I had automated everything else in my business. Why hadn’t I automated this?
The answer was clear: I needed a complete solution. License management for my software products. Download management for distributing updates. Subscription management for recurring services. All of it automated, all of it integrated.
But when I looked at the market, I’d need multiple solutions:
- Licensing system ($200-300/year): To protect my software and validate customer licenses
- Subscription manager ($200/year): To automate renewals for hosting/support services
- Download/update management ($100-200/year): To deliver software updates securely
Total cost: $500-700 per year – before earning a single dollar from products still in development.
I was angry. Angry at myself for letting renewals slip. Angry that solution providers had no entry-level pricing for developers just starting out.
The Decision
As a developer, I understand that software creators need to be paid for their work. But there should be a solution for those just starting who can’t justify paying such premiums.
That’s when I decided: I’ll build it myself.
A single plugin that would handle Licensing, Downloads, AND Subscriptions management. Everything I needed, in one place.
When Ideas Take On a Life of Their Own
Of course, the idea started growing.
Why not add service contracts management? I could use that for my client hosting/support services.
Why not a support desk? I’d need that eventually.
Why not team management? What if my company grows and I hire people?
The list kept expanding. I knew this was too much for a solo developer. And I knew the reality: during development, I’d have to turn down site projects. Building this huge idea would bring me no money – in fact, I’d probably lose some.
Then I thought: What if I sell this instead of just using it myself? That could compensate me for the development work.
But it would take too long to build everything. And I’d hate to become another vendor that ignores solo developers just starting out – the very problem that frustrated me.
The Strategy
After a lot of thinking about how the market works, I made four decisions:
Decision 1: Start with a free core. Build a core plugin with the basic functionalities I needed immediately – Licenses, Downloads, and Subscriptions. Offer it completely free so other solo developers and digital product creators could find an affordable solution.
Decision 2: Design for scale from the beginning. Invest time to architect a complete solution suitable even for large teams, agencies, and companies that could afford to pay. Even the free core would include the foundation for extensions that could serve the largest companies.
Decision 3: Progressive development of premium extensions. Build extensions over time that add advanced capabilities. Hopefully, revenue from these would cover my investment and generate some profit – creating a sustainable business model where the core stays free forever.
Decision 4: Build a community around it. Create a dedicated website (DMSI.gr) to promote the plugin, provide comprehensive documentation, offer support, and establish communication channels for community feedback. This two-way interaction would help me continuously improve while helping others solve similar problems. A rising tide lifts all boats.
The Reality of Solo Development
I ended up creating specification documents totaling almost 1.3 million words, plus diagrams and technical designs.
Then I started implementing.
The core plugin (DDLS – Digital Downloads, Licensing & Subscriptions) took me more than 6 months of development. Seven days a week, sometimes 16 hours a day.
Yes, I overestimated myself and underestimated the effort needed. Solo developers usually do.
Where We Are Now
DDLS is ready.
I’ll keep improving it as I use it in production and as you provide feedback. I know it will solve my licensing, downloads, and subscriptions needs – I designed it specifically for that purpose.
I only hope it helps you too.
The WordPress community has given me so much over the years – free plugins, free themes, countless answers in forums, tutorials that saved me hours. DMSI DDLS is my way of giving back while also helping other solo developers avoid the $500-700/year barrier I couldn’t justify.
If you’re a solo developer or small team just starting out, you shouldn’t have to choose between paying premium prices or building your own licensing system. Now you have a third option.
What’s Next
The 8 premium extensions are planned and designed. They’ll launch progressively as they’re completed – no rushed releases, no half-finished products.
Development takes time when you’re one person. But the architecture is solid, the foundation is tested in production, and the roadmap is clear.
This is just the beginning.
Why “Dream Makers”?
Dream Makers Software Innovations reflects what I do: I build tools that help creators turn their dreams to sustainable businesses. Trying to develop the software that many of us often dreamed of.
The “DDLS” part – Digital Downloads, Licensing & Subscriptions – describes what this first product does. Future products will expand the DMSI portfolio, but they’ll all share the same philosophy: affordable, self-hosted, creator-friendly tools.
Our Mission
Empowering Solo Developers and Small Teams
I believe every developer deserves access to enterprise-grade tools, regardless of budget.
What This Means:
Affordable Tools. I build software that’s either free or priced fairly. No subscription traps, no feature hostage situations, no vendor lock-in. DMSI DDLS core is 100% free forever. Extensions (coming soon) will be priced at 50-70% less than competitors.
Self-Hosted Solutions. Your data belongs to you. All DMSI products run on your infrastructure. No external dependencies, no “phone home” requirements, no third-party tracking. You’re in complete control.
Developer-Friendly Design. I build tools I’d want to use myself. Clean code, comprehensive documentation, well-documented APIs, and extension hooks everywhere. If you can build it with WordPress, you can customize DMSI products.
Transparent Development. I develop in the open. The roadmap is public. Pricing is clear. I explain my decisions. I listen to feedback. No surprises, no hidden agendas.
Sustainable Business Model. Free core products funded by optional premium extensions. This keeps core products accessible to everyone while generating revenue to fund continued development. Win-win.
Our Values
What Guides My Decisions
Authenticity. I use my own products in production. Every feature exists because I needed it myself. I don’t build vaporware or features that look good in marketing but fail in practice.
Quality Over Speed. DMSI DDLS spent months in development before public release. I believe in thorough testing, comprehensive documentation, and rock-solid foundations. Fast follows, but not at the expense of quality.
Community First. Solo developers and small teams built the WordPress ecosystem. I prioritize their needs over enterprise clients. Features that help the 90% come before features that help the 10%.
Fair Pricing. If I charge for something, it’s priced fairly based on value delivered, not “what the market will bear.” I’m building a sustainable business, not trying to get rich quick.
Long-Term Thinking. I’m not here to build something, flip it, and move on. I’m building for the long term – sustainable products, sustainable business, sustainable relationships with users.
What Makes Us Different
Why Choose DMSI?
I’m Not a Corporation. DMSI is me, a solo developer with community help for support and testing. This means:
- Fast decision-making (no committee approval)
- Direct communication (talk to the person building the product)
- Genuine care about user experience (my reputation is on the line)
- Reasonable expectations (I know what solo devs can handle)
I’m a User, Not Just a Developer. DMSI DDLS powers my own products in production. Every bug affects me directly. Every feature request comes from real needs, not theoretical use cases. I feel your pain because it’s my pain too.
I’m Budget-Conscious. I built DMSI DDLS because I couldn’t justify $500-700/year for existing solutions. I understand tight budgets, slow months, and the fear of recurring costs. That’s why the core is free and extensions are priced affordably.
I’m Transparent. No hidden fees. No surprise price increases. No features held hostage. The roadmap is public. Pricing philosophy is explained. Decision-making is documented. You know what you’re getting and what’s coming.
I’m Patient. Building a sustainable product takes time. I’m not rushing to monetize or pushing aggressive upsells. The core plugin launched complete and free. Extensions will launch when they’re ready, not when investors demand returns.

Final Thoughts
Why I Do This
Building software is hard. Building a business is harder. But building something that helps other people build their businesses? That’s incredibly rewarding.
Every time someone downloads DMSI DDLS and uses it to launch their product, that’s a small win for the independent developer community. Every license generated through DMSI is one less barrier between a developer’s work and their customers.
The WordPress community gave me the foundation to build a career. DMSI is how I give back.
If DMSI DDLS helps you launch your product, manage your licenses, or save $500-700/year on solution costs, then it’s worth every hour spent building it.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
