Understanding Stale Activations #
A stale activation is one that’s still marked as active but hasn’t checked in for 30+ days.
Why Activations Become Stale #
| Reason | Description |
|---|---|
| Staging/Dev Sites | Developer stops using staging but forgets to deactivate |
| Migrated Sites | Customer moves to new domain but keeps old activation |
| Abandoned Sites | Site goes offline, activation never removed |
| Server Issues | Server blocks API calls (rare) |
| Plugin Disabled | Customer temporarily disables plugin |
Stale Detection #
Threshold: 30 days (configurable)
| Last Check-in | Days Ago | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 1, 2024 | 41 days | STALE |
| Nov 10, 2024 | 5 days | Active |
Finding Stale Activations #
- Go to DDLS > Activations
- Click “Stale” tab at top
- See all activations with no check-in for 30+ days
What to Do About Stale Activations #
| Option | When to Use | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Contact Customer | Important domain | Email asking if site is still used |
| Deactivate | Clearly abandoned (90+ days) | Bulk deactivate obvious ones |
| Monitor | Uncertain | Wait 30 more days then decide |
Recommended workflow:
- 30 days: Flag as stale, monitor
- 60 days: Email customer
- 90 days: Deactivate if no response
- 120 days: Delete record if still inactive
