Product Configuration Best Practices #
Guidelines for setting up products effectively.
Pricing Strategy #
Start with Clear Tiers #
| Tier | Activations | Price | Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | 1 site | $49/year | Basic |
| Business | 5 sites | $99/year | Basic |
| Agency | 25 sites | $199/year | Premium |
Consider Lifetime vs. Subscription #
Subscription Model:
- Lower upfront cost
- Predictable recurring revenue
- Higher lifetime value
- More complex to manage
Lifetime Model:
- Higher upfront cost
- Simpler for customer
- Less recurring revenue
- Popular for WordPress products
Hybrid (Most Popular):
- Lifetime license + annual support
- Best of both worlds
- Customer owns software forever
- Pays annually for updates and support
License Types (New in v1.2.0) #
Create Types Before Products #
Set up your License Types under Settings > License Types before configuring products. A well-designed type library simplifies product setup and keeps defaults consistent across your catalog.
Recommended approach:
- Create one type per pricing tier (e.g., Personal, Business, Agency, Enterprise)
- Set sensible defaults on each type
- Use product-level overrides only when a specific product genuinely differs from the type default
Avoid Over-Overriding #
If you find yourself overriding Activation Limit and Duration on every product, the License Type defaults are probably not set correctly. Update the type defaults instead.
Support Settings #
Match Support to Price Point #
| Price | Support Level | Response Time |
|---|---|---|
| Under $50 | Basic | 24-48 hours |
| $50-$150 | Basic or Premium | 24 hours |
| $150-$300 | Premium | 12 hours |
| $300+ | Enterprise | 4 hours |
Always Enable “Requires Support for Downloads” #
This ensures:
- Customers renew support to get updates
- Recurring revenue stream
- Motivation to stay current
Activation Limits #
Be Generous #
- Too restrictive = frustrated customers
- Too generous = potential abuse
- Most customers use 1-3 activations even with higher limits
Common Limits by Tier #
| Tier | Recommended Limit |
|---|---|
| Personal | 1-3 |
| Business | 5-10 |
| Agency | 25-50 |
| Enterprise | Unlimited |
Testing #
Always Test New Products #
Before going live:
Keep Test Products Separate #
- Use naming convention: “[TEST] Product Name”
- Set to Draft or Private
- Delete after testing complete
Documentation #
Document Your Configurations #
Keep a record of:
- What each product offers
- Pricing rationale
- Support expectations
- Any special arrangements
This helps with:
- Customer support
- Future changes
- Team onboarding
