License Lifecycle Analysis #
License lifecycle analysis shows how long licenses remain active from creation to expiration or cancellation, and at what points in the lifecycle customers are most likely to leave.
Average License Lifespan #
The average license lifespan is the mean time (in days) from license creation to license expiration or cancellation for licenses that have already ended.
A longer average lifespan indicates customers are renewing repeatedly. A shorter one indicates customers are not renewing after their initial term.
Lifecycle Stages #
DMSI Analytics tracks licenses through these states (sourced from DDLS Core license status changes):
| Stage | Description |
|---|---|
| Active | License is valid and in use |
| Expired | Passed expiration date without renewal |
| Cancelled | Customer or admin explicitly cancelled |
| Suspended | Temporarily disabled |
| Revoked | Access removed (e.g., policy violation) |
The lifecycle analysis shows how many licenses are in each state and the average time spent in each state.
Drop-off Points #
The lifecycle chart highlights common drop-off points (moments when licenses move from active to expired/cancelled). Use this to understand when customers are most likely to leave:
- Month 1: If high, indicates initial value problems or onboarding failures
- Month 12: If high for annual licenses, indicates customers are not renewing (expected but worth reducing)
- Random: Random drop-offs usually indicate payment failures
